US paper seeks pot correspondent

(IMG:http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/46590000/jpg/_46590242_008146045-1.jpg)

A US newspaper says it has received well over 100 applicants for the post of marijuana critic - many of whom have offered to work for free.

The alternative Denver newspaper, Westword, is seeking a writer for its weekly review of Colorado's booming medical marijuana dispensaries.

But there is a catch - candidates must have a medical ailment allowing them to enter a dispensary and use marijuana.

Fourteen US states now allow the sale of some sort of medical cannabis.

'Stoned'

"Keep in mind this isn't about assessing the quality of the medicine on site; it's about evaluating the quality of the establishment," says the Westword job posting.

"After all, we can't have our reviewer be stoned all the time."

States like Colorado and California, where medical use is legal, have seen an explosion in the number of pot shops - ranging from upmarket clinics to dingy drugs dens.

The dispensaries sell more than a dozen varieties, from White Widow to the less expensive Afghan Gold Seal. Some cost up to $130 (£78) an ounce.

But the writer of Westword's Mile Highs and Lows column is expected to focus on the dispensaries, not the drugs.

"Compensation will be meagre," says the posting. It says the paper can't pay for marijuana purchases, "although that would be pretty cool."

Lol, never been into drugs, legal or illegal. Except gin. And coffee. And steak. And occasional cheesecake.

Tastes like pine needles. Very dry, not sweet at all, just the way i like it - sweet stuff makes me sick if i drink a lot of it. Gin goes down easy.

have you had absinthe?

I'll have to get some gin and try it.

What is a good kind that is not too expensive -- something medium priced?

I typically buy Beefeater, but that's a bit on the expensive side - $40/1.75 liter bottle. I'm drinking today for the first time in a few weeks cause it was getting ridiculous - at one point, i had $160 worth of gin bottles sitting around, and only one was full lol. I'm all for becoming an alcoholic, but jeez... it does go hard on the wallet. So i stopped.

Anyway, back in my (much poorer) college days, i'd buy Seagram's gin for half the price of Beefeater. To be fair, i kinda miss Seagram's - it was hard kicking and honest. Beefeater is much stronger, but also much smoother, so it starts very easy, but then floors you and there's not much you can do about it at that point. Wicked sick, literally. Seagram's is cheap, and when you drink it, it delivers the kick right off the bat - no nasty surprises later.

If you are just trying it out, i'd recommend mixing gin with something - typically, it's tonic (Canada Dry FTW), but Red Bull or other stuff works too, depends on your plans for the night. :)

I mix mine with green tea - do NOT recommend it to start with - when i started it way back in 2005, i was sick with cold and just wanted to avoid Tylenol (never mix Tylenol and alcohol - liver damage), and wanted something to make me sweat. When i tried gintea, i almost threw up, but it did make me sweat. Cold was gone the next day. Nowadays, i'm so used to the taste, i don't know what i'd do without it. Beats any other mixed drink i've tried. It really grows on you. :)

Seagram's it is.

I guess I'll mix with ginger ale? How does that sound?

I could try green tea, no? I drink green tea almost every day.

I have white tea to use up too -- not enough taste in that for me to use plain.

Never tried ginger ale, but if you like it, sure, let me know how it goes. :)

As for tea... i'd say try at your own risk. :P I drink mine plain (no sugar or anything, except gin), so it took a while to get used to. I'd recommend going easy on the gin part - just make your favorite tea, and spike it with a little bit of gin. See how it goes. Increase if necessary.
