I am in a book club on another board.

So far we have read Moll Flanders & Madame Bovary.

We are starting Tess of the D'urbervilles right now.

We read about one book per month, so it is rather low pressure.

We post a few posts about each book, but not spoilers,
(usually outdated/quirky words we do not know with definitions)
then at the end, give our opinions of the book/characters/writing.

If anyone wants to read with me, let me know.
Most of these books you can get at your local library too.

After Tess, we will do Mrs. Dalloway, by Virginia Woolf.

Looks like in TESS, we have some real winner parents again:

I loved the description of the mother "Her mother's intelligence was that of a
happy child: Joan Durbeyfield was simply an additional one..."

And I loved the description of the dad:

"Durbeyfield was what was locally called a slack-twisted fellow;
he had good strength to work at times; but the times could not be relied
on to coincide with the hours of requirement...."

After 'Mrs Dalloway', we are reading 'Call of the Wild'.

Sounds interesting!

I would love to take part but am reading two pretty involved books, right now.

I have finished TESS!

One part I knew what would happen,
That she'd meet up with her first lover,
but I really did not foresee the ending so much.

In 2 parts I thought TESS was foolish:
when she would not get help from her in-laws, and the ending.
Not that they would have helped her, and she sensed
that, and that would hurt her more and she shied away.
For the ending, I think she could have simply left the situation
without the added drama. But then my ending would not have
made the story a classic book ...and it may not have rung true
to deep human nature and pain either.

Obviously the men were harsh and indifferent to her,
I think she cracked in the end; she was just pushed too much
and she had lost a baby. All that heartache and loss of dignity
with no baby to show for it anyway.

And her parents were ineffectual and too fertile.
All this does not make a happy life without some bad consequence.

*****

Next Up: 'Mrs. Dalloway' in 1-2 weeks. emo-Dancing_Hamster.gif

i had to read Tess a few years back in school. could not get through it. i wrote my essay on it using Sparknotes
fuzzynavel
It picked up at one point and then was more interesting.

I knew Alec would see her again.

She should have confronted him with the baby and gave him a chance.

In those days, a woman HAD to have a husband if there was a baby.

How about her parents sending her off to a strange place
with a strange man, nice eh?

Historical is my fav read..........

I have a book to finish too...need the weekend to get it done.

If you want to start the second Zinn book soon, let me know!
fuzzynavel
Bill, did you read The Shock Doctrine?

I started it, but did not get far. I read a lot of Klein's stuff online,
so I know her work, but I did not finish the book.

If you are interested in reading that one, there is another option.

Also, have you ever considered James Michener's books?

They are fiction but highly based on real history and geography.
fuzzynavel
Bill, another option is OVERTHROW by Steven Kinzer.

Bill?

Bill?

Bill, are you there? user posted image Hullo? I'm looking for BILL.

I also have FAILED STATES by Noam Chomsky.

Handy map; so if you travel to any of these states,
be sure to carry a copy or 2, prominently displayed...

Ah, the only thing that makes me feel better than banning books, is burning witches. I love the smell of auto de fe in the morning. Smells like it's 1692 again.
fuzzynavel
Started "Call of the Wild" tonite.

Is it PG13 rated? dry.gif
fuzzynavel
It's violent.
Malkavian
Ah, i was hoping for more emo-banana-sexinbed.gif
fuzzynavel
Well it is about dogs, but they are part of a sled team.

It is written from a dog's point of view.
Malkavian
Dogs, violent, and no emo-banana-sexinbed.gif

Sounds sad. sad.gif
fuzzynavel
Yeah it is, some scumbag sold a big dog to sled owners who work the dogs very hard. Then there is jockeying for leader between the dogs. I really think it is a metaphor for man, but we'll see.

I have found that keeping a book in the bathroom works.

Even if you only read a few pages, you can get a book done.

I generally am too wired to read till about an hour before bed.

It's actually a great way to wind down to sleep....I mean if you aren't getting laid.

The other thing I do is read during TV/Movie commercial breaks.
The mute button on the remote gets a good workout.

Instead of hearing Free Credit Report dot com songs over & over
or whatever unnecessary drugs are being hawked, you can read a page or 2.

By the end of the night, you can get a chapter done and you have
accomplished something you want to do, not been a slave to whatever
some marketing hack wants to shove into your brain.

If there are no commercials then you have to find other time.

I actually get lots done during commercials, laundry: letting dogs in/out, etc.

Sometimes I get disappointed in HBO and the like because there are no breaks laugh.gif
Malkavian
You'd hate Tivo then.
fuzzynavel
Not hate it, I just find it unnecessary. If I am so busy not to watch several things,
then I am too busy to watch them later too.

Which is probably a good thing. Now that many shows repeat themselves,
you can catch up on them or Hulu, and the like, helps.
